I.M. - Eagle Bill Amato, Turned on the World to Vaporizers - by Don E Wirtshafter

Eagle Bill Amato, born Frank William Wood, passed peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, May 22, 2005.

Born, April 10, 1942 in Cleveland , Ohio , he was 63 at the time of his death. Two months ago he was diagnosed with advanced cancer. He spent his final days helping ready a new publication of his autobiography and enjoying time with his friends and family.

A resident of Amsterdam for 12 years, Bill returned to his native Georgia in the United States so he could die in the company of his family and friends there. Bill was of the Cherokee Nation in ancestry and spirituality. In the face of grave illness, Bill kept his determination to die with dignity.

His passing was a lesson to all involved about how to face death without fear.

Eagle Bill is known for the popularizing of the vaporizer, which he termed a "safe and effective alternative to smoking." For over a decade he was a favored exhibit at the Sensi Seed Hash Museum in Amsterdam. The museum attracts visitors from around the world and Bill enjoyed sharing his new technologies any willing inhalers.

Bill wore many hats in his life.  A native of rural Georgia , Bill's first venture was doing the local thing, stealing cars. In his autobiography, 10% THC, A Cannabis Tale , Bill describes how a friend turned him on to marijuana and this changed his perspective on life. From then on he quit doing stupid, illegal stuff and became a small-time marijuana salesman. Bill started growing pot in the late 60's. This started with one castaway seed that sprouted next to his driveway. The plant grew to 9 feet tall before Bill noticed it and reached 17 feet tall at harvest. Bill had a new occupation. The next years Bill planted 18 plants and year by year his ambitions grew as fast as the weed.  At the time he got busted he was raising exotic birds and horses and living the good life.

After prison, Bill continued to grow for himself and became a recognized expert in home growing of quality sensimilla.  At one point he visited Amsterdam and made friends with the Ben Dronkers family, proprietors of the Sensi Seed Company.

Bill's second life conversion came during the weekend that Bill and his companion Linda visited me at the Ohio Hempery. Linda wanted to pick up some cloth for sewing. Bill wanted legal advice. I was heading out to a regional Rainbow Gathering and invited them along. Bill quickly rose into the spirit of the gathering and has not been the same since. That weekend we had a long chance to talk about Bill's legal problems. Bill was tired of being in the closet. He was determined to shake up the world about his two issues, native rights and marijuana. He said he did not care what happened to himself in the process. After hearing of the unsafe chances Bill was taking in Georgia , my advice was clear, get back to Amsterdam as quickly as possible.  Bill would be safe there..

Thus Eagle Bill was born; a native spirit out change the horrendous laws against marijuana and hemp.  Linda sewed her hemp cloth into a full battle dress for Bill to wear on his mission. Bill finished his affairs in Georgia and headed off to Europe .

Bill met a good reception on his return to Amsterdam, especially from the Dronkers family. This was soon before the 1994 Cannabis Cup.

Sensi Seeds gave Bill space and he blew away the crowd with his new technology. It remained the most popular exhibit at the Cannabis Cup for 10 years, earning Bill and Sensi Seeds numerous first place cups. Soon he set up shop on a daily basis in the Hash Museum and used that platform to turn the world on to vaporization.

Bill devoted the rest of his life toward making people aware that smoking herbs like tobacco or cannabis causes inhalation of carbon monoxide and carcinogenetic tars. These harmful compounds have no known psychoactive effects. The only reason to burn herb was to generate hot air to evaporate the aromatic resins from the unburned material.  Vaporizers use hot air only, no smoke and few carcinogens are produced.  The result is a much cleaner high than anything anybody had experienced before.

Bill invented several forms of the vaporizer including the 10 gallon jar model he displayed  at large shows for its dramatic effect.  His one piece glass "shake and bake" pipe was adopted by the Netherlands government as part of their medical marijuana program. The Eagle Bill vaporizers are now available at most any pharmacy in Holland .

2004 - Cannabis activist, Cherokee Marijhuana Medicine Man, Reefer refugee, and one of the pioneers of the world of vaporization, Eagle Bill has had over 20 years experience growing cannabis and is devoted to educating people about the fact that Marijhuana can be a medicine.

A well-known figure on the Amsterdam cannabis scene for fifteen years, Eagle Bill is American, from Cleveland Ohio. Two English grandparents notwithstanding, he is part Cherokee. "Only a little part, y'understand, but it's the key part." The active ingredient. After an extremely colourful life, near-death experiences and larger than life brushes with the law, snippets of which he may tell you if you earn his trust, he found himself in Amsterdam learning about the technique of vaporising cannabis, before any of today's devices existed. He felt that this way of taking the herb had to be much safer than smoking it, and he's promoted vaporisation ever since.

Over time Eagle Bill developed the 'Shake 'n Vape', a portable version of the vaporiser. He has also wrote a book called '10 % THC, a cannabis tale'.

He has been seen at numerous cannabis venues, with his huge vapor bottle and hot air gun, or with a more portable modern electrical device, with long queues waiting for a go on his vaporiser. He's 'vaporised' thousands, per year, as resident at the Hash and Marihuana Museum, and all the current vaporizers owe something to him.

Ed Rosenthal in 'Trash to Stash': “Eagle Bill was among the original vapor pioneers. He became known in parts of Europe, where he wandered on his pilgrimage for vaporization techniques. He is among the few inventors who have designed simple portable vapor pipes”.

EAGLE BILL

I was in Adam in 1998 for my first trip and was at the hemp museum (I think thats where I was) and there was this dude there called Eagle Bill, had some sort of vaprorizer and was offering to let me try it, I did of course. Is he still there and does anyone know who this guy is?
Thanks

Eagle Bill is the inventor of the vaporizer.

I was interrupted and was unable to finish the post above, If you want to know more about the man, the myth that is Eagle Bill, here is some info in dutch and english: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

eagle bill was my first vapor experiance, in the back of the hash musuem, i talked to the guy for awhile and then he offers me a hit off of the giant bottle of vapor (he did ask for a small contribution)...he asked me if i was a daily smoker and i said yes and took a large hit, he watched me and asked how it was, i told him okay, he then said he would turn the hot air gun up a notch and literally blow vapor into my lungs, i took the second hit and he watched and told me i had a high tolerance and he would give me one more hit, i took all i could and was trying to use sign lanuage to tell him i wanted more, he knew i had had enough and turned it off, i slide back against the wall and came damn close to passing out, there were 3 or 4 english tourist there watching me and after looking at me and then at eagle bill and his giant vaporizer only one of them summoned up the courage to hit it. needless to say when i returned to the states none of my friends believed my story, that is untill i bought a vaporizer over the internet and now i am a legend in my little hood.

hey patrick today things just got dry wanna trade

my goodness smutdog, it really must be a small world, it went dry for me about a week ago, i was told it would be dry untill the end of sept. thank goodness i have a small stash of the NYC diesiel to get me thru atleast a couple weeks of the dry spell. then i have to go back to the reggie.

I mean the stuff in jars is dry and ready, not that im out[/font]

Volkskrant: The Amazing Vaporizer Story
(This is an article from the Dutch leading daily 'de Volkskrant' from friday April 5th 1996).
 |
A vaporisor, a big one, a with water filled jampot and two glass-blown pipes; Eagle Bill's vaporiser is not a very beautiful invention. But it works, according to users, 'super high', without pulmonary affections, perfectly for medically use of cannabis.
Eagle Bill is a half Indian of 53 years young, raised in the Smokey Mountains. He likes to call himself 'medicine man of the West'. For fifteen years he worked very hard at his invention. And like all big inventions, the solution, a vaporizer was a real simple one. Since then he walks through land and city with his vaporizer. But his aim of life, to make the world healthy with cannabis, still doesn't get the honor that it deserves, according to Bill. He's a little bit disappointed about that.

Different from a normal waterpipe, in the vaporizer, the marijuana doesn't combust. The vaporizer heats the weed till exactly 210 degrees(c). That's 20 degrees below combusting- temperature. Exposed to this heat, the volatile oil from the hash-glands of the plant evaporates. That's how the active elements come free in cold air, and can be breathed moleculai rely by the user. "The healthy way to experience cannabis", according to Bill.
On Friday-afternoons, Bill is demonstrating his vaporizer in the Drugs Peace House, a place where you can meet other canna bists in the Amsterdam Spuistraat. Bill was renamed in a 'cannabis-sjaman', and officially 'in charge of promoting medical aspects of cannabis'. The admission in his own circles is very big.

The appearance of Eagle Bill looks a bit like a male-witch. He drags himself along with a two meter long walking-stick with Indian carvings. In his other hand his inseparable suitcase with jampots, in which several sorts of cannabis are being kept. And not any of that genetical manipulated lamps-weed from Dutch making. Bill only uses fair sorts of weed, exotic and sun-ripped. Name a disease, and Eagle Bill knows a sort of weed to enlighten it. Against depressions for an instance, he recommends Kaliganga, an energetic Jamaican weed which stimulates the fantasies. Headaches he controls with a Mexican variant, a far relaxed 'upperdy-up weedy'!.

Users in the Drugs Peace House are really enthusiast, and nearly never sick anymore. J. Offeciers says to go really "van de plank" from the vaporizer. Others honored the purity of taste, in which you would taste how fresh cannabis can be. "The bouquet!", one distracted American shouts out surprised.
Cannabis is being used as an anti-vomiting remedy for patients who undergo chemotherapy or use breakers for aids, as a hunger-stimulator against anorexia, and as a muscle-relaxant for MS and green cataract. Fear for addiction to the euphoria keeps many doctors from accepting the advantages of cannabis. Peer Neeleman, pain-attender in the Rotterdam Dijkzigthospital, is waiting with tension for a vaporizer with which exact doses of cannabinol can be administered. Then the ethical commission of the hospital will give permission for a serious investigation. A vaporizer from the alternative circuit, he doesn't trust. "It is nice for a party". Moreover, the vaporiser is too heavy for a MS-patient. Until there is developed a tractable apparatus, with which you can decide the doses, Neeleman is trying to do his work with weed-wraped tea. At home with the patients of course, because in the hospital it's not allowed.
In the mean time, Eagle Bill continues his mission. He is still looking for patients, so that he can prove that his method really works. Volunteers can enter one's name to the Drugs Peace House.

After placing this article, patients searched for contact with Eagle Bill. From this contacts it is evident, that the dosage of cannabis can be decided so exactly that the patient doesn't get high, though can be helped for example with raising queasiness after chemotherapy. More patients with more different affections can give a more complete vision of the possibility for using cannabis this way.

Frank Wiliam Wood A.K.A. EAGLE BILL AMATO (04/10/1942 - 05/21/2005)
(Sorry, but you are not allowed to access the gallery)

Cannabis activist, Cherokee Marijhuana Medicine Man, Reefer refugee, and one of the pioneers of the world of vaporization, Eagle Bill  (1942 - 2005), had over 30 years experience growing cannabis and was devoted to educating people about the fact that Marijhuana can be a medicine.

Eagle Bill first became aware of the reality of Marijhuana being used as medicine in the early 80's through his suggestion a friend, who was undergoing chemo therapy for treatment of cancer, was brought to him. Bill's friend's body was in a weak and frail stat due to the modern cancer treatments which caused a constant lack of appetite, nausea and vomiting. He came to Eagle Bill in the hope of lessening his pain through the use of cannabis. After smoking half a joint with Bill, he developed the "munchies" and promptly left to go to eat. Over a period of time Bill watched his friend rebuild his body, using Marijhuana as medicine.

In 1993 Eagle Bill was introduced to vaporizing by a Californian grower. The method consisted of using a heat gun to vaporize the THC. Since this time Eagle Bill has modified this simple idea to become what is known as "Eagle Bill's peace pipe of the future". To make vaporization more available to everyone, he came up with the "shake and vape" based on ancient Egyptian methods of using hot stones to hold the temperature necessary to vaporize cannabis. Eagle Bill became an active exhibit at the Hemp, Hash Museum in Amsterdam, where he You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to let people get a hands on experience with vaporizing.

Eagle Bill Amato died In 2005. Bill was known around the world as the spokesman for vaporization and the use of medicinal cannabis. He will be remebered by many grateful people as the "Father of Vapor".
