The Crafty is one of two new Vaporizers that Storz and Bickel have released, the other one being the larger Mighty. As I'm interested in a portable vaporizer to replace my Solo and I like smartphone gadgets I opted to pick up the Crafty.

Video Demonstration: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

First Impression: Wow, this draws easy. It's almost exactly like drawing off a desktop vape

Pros
Compact
No required accessories for use
Easy to take apart for cleaning
Hits nicely
Efficient
Vibration to indicate readiness

Cons
Limited battery life
Smartphone app required to use more than 2 pre-set temperatures
Lots of seals and screens that will need to be replaced over time
Very short turn-off timer (1 minute) requiring you to press the button often

Unboxing

The Accessories : You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
The Crafty Itself : You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

The first thing that is obvious about the Crafty is its high quality manufacturing. The plastic is stiff and has a semi-matte finish that conveys quality. It almost feels like one of those old bell system phones made out of bakelite. Those fins on the side make holding it is a very tactile experience.

Loading Material

Remove Top : You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
Fit The Filling Tool : You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
Remove The Center Plug : You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

The process of loading looks like it has a lot of steps, but once you get it down it's pretty easy. The loading tool means that you can load without spilling any herb into the lower chamber where it's hard to clean out. It's pretty easy to load without the tool, but I wouldn't want to see how much build-up occurs if you do that.
The finer your grind the better your vapor, just like any vape. There is a fine mesh screen inside so you can grind it pretty small, but you can't get under that screen to clean it out so be careful if you use a coffee grinder to powder your herb.
I've been just dumping enough in to fill the oven to the top of the bowl without packing it down at all and it works great. My scale says that's 0.2g, you can probably pack a half gram in if you tamp it down but I wouldn't want to draw through that. It even worked well with just a tiny load that didn't even register 0.1g.

Heating Up
It takes 2-3 minutes to heat up, but the nice part is the built-in vibration. It will vibrate at 4 different times:

-When you turn it on
-When it reaches the desired temperature
-When you switch between low and high
-When it turns off.

This means you don't have to keep checking to see how hot it is. Just turn it on and wait for the vibration.

Consuming Vapor
Once you've loaded up the Crafty a short (1 sec) press of the button will turn it on. The red light will shine until it reaches temperature, at which point it will change to green. From here just draw as you would any other vaporizer.
Since this is a temperature regulated device the speed you draw at doesn't change the quality of the vapor much, but it will change the density. I found that sipping it just a little heavier than I would the solo seemed ideal.
At 180ºC the ABV comes out ( You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login ) a little on the light side, but even regrinding doesn't get me much extra vapor so it's doing a pretty good job of extracting the desired chemicals.

Vapor Production
The vapor production doesn't blow me away, but I'm already used to the Solo's production, which is going to be a tough one to top. The vapor clouds I'm pulling off the Crafty are limited only by my lung capacity, and the vapor starts basically instantly. If anything, the vapor cooling chamber makes it so I can take slightly larger hits than I can on the Solo.
When I took the first sip my thought was "Wow". It felt like there was barely any resistance at all, almost like inhaling a volcano bag. With time and practice I've found that my first impression wasn't exactly correct, but the draw weight is so much lower than my baseline with the Solo that it felt like nothing.

Draw Weight
In terms of draw weight I compared it against several other vaporizers I had on hand. All were tested while empty and here's how heavy I felt the draw on each one was, from lightest to heaviest:

-MFLB
-Crafty
-iolite
-Solo
-Indica

Size
Size Comparison: Crafty, iolite, Solo, Indica, MFLB You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
Size Comparison, side shot You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
Size wise the Crafty is slightly smaller and lighter than the Solo. It's about the same size as the iolite, although it folds into a silghtly more compact shape. It's about twice the size of the Indica, and 3 times as big as an MFLB. It's heavier than all 4 of those vaporizers with the exception of the Solo.

Battery Life
I got 4 or 5 ovens out of a charge. Those ovens were spread across 2.5 sessions, so not too shabby. You can use it while charging, although it may use more power than your USB port can provide if you are not using the provided adaptor.

Required Accessories
If you want to carry the minimal amount possible you can't do any better than the Crafty. Everything you need to consume an oven load is part of the device. No stem to remove or risk breaking off. No tools required to fill or empty the chamber. The straw spins around to sit flush with the body so you can just toss it in your pocket and go. It's even small enough to fit in non-skinny jeans.

Optional Accessories
For a nicer experience there are a couple things you can take with you. The best is the filling tool. This takes pre-ground herb and puts it into a sealable container that locks into the bowl, allowing you to fill without spilling anything. It works amazingly well. Initially I estimated that it would hold 2-3 loads, but after actually filling it a few times it can hold quite a bit, easily 5-7 loads.
It also comes with the standard S&B grinder and brush, for preparing your herb and brushing it into the filling tool.

Cleaning
It's obvious that a lot of thought was put into the ability to clean this device. The cooling tower comes apart to clean, and you'll definitely need to clean it regularly, as evidenced here: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login That picture was taken after 6 loads, and the ABV you see there is very sticky. A little iso and a q-tip worked well, but do not use the brush or you will ruin it.

The Circle
A lot of vaporizers, the MFLB in particular, have a problem when used in The Circle. Inexperienced users need training, patience and practice to be successful. The Crafty does not suffer from this problem. You will benefit from studying technique and practicing how you draw, but it's not required to have a good time. You can simply load it and pass it around and people will be able to figure it out without your help.

Smartphone Integration
Unfortunately Storz & Bickel have not done their homework when it comes to releasing apps on the iPhone App Store. As a software developer this irritates me greatly, since it shows a lack of respect for software engineering. Storz and Bickel obviously have a great respect for engineering, so I'm hoping that this was simply a one-time mistake that won't be repeated.

Should You Buy It?
That's a hard question to answer. If you're made of money the answer is unequivically yes. For the rest of us, it depends on you.
This has the vapor production of the Solo, the portability of the Indica, and battery life somewhere in the middle. If you don't need all day battery life or you can charge it between uses the Crafty will serve you better than any other vaporizer on the market. If that's what you want, and you can bring yourself to spend $400, you will not regret the purchase.

What Would I Do If I Had It To Do Over Again?
Knowing what I know now, I'd be hard pressed to spend the extra money over the Solo. I've had no problems with the stems breaking and I rarely need to carry it in my pocket. Having rendered my Crafty unreturnable I'll definitely be giving it an extended trial, but in a few weeks I'll have to decide between selling it or selling my Indica.

Conclusion
You can buy an MFLB for a lighter draw-weight. Then buy an Indica for a portable non-fragile piece. Then you should buy a Solo for battery life. If you buy all 3 you will have vaporizers that do several things better than the Crafty. Nothing on the market, however, does as many things as well as the Crafty does in such a small package. I can't think of any aspect of the device that doesn't meet the minimum threshold for a high quality vaporizer.
In short, it provides an all-around experience you will be happy with, even if you are a high-tolerance user like me.
